Sense of humour

Ready to burst out with a smile, laugh or joke including making fun of ourselves.

I have a friend from North Dublin who is known as my ‘big sister’ and she has taught me more on how to laugh and joke than anyone else over the last couple of years. “You’re blown ou(t)!” is one phrase that she likes to throw at me every now and again. It means: I’m done with ya, I’m sick of ya, I never want to see ya, and in some circles, it means I’m divorcin ya.

Sis likes to put me in my place when I’m getting high and mighty or too confident and assertive. She grounds me when I need grounding, reminding me that a lot of us are on the same boat on this journey of life – dreaming big, achieving a certain amount, and that good fortune is to be deeply appreciated. All I need is a knowing smile from Sis – a wham of reality – and I know that I need to laugh at myself and let go.

I recall plenty of conversations that have brought much joy to my day. On one occasion, Sis noted that she had never heard so many ‘descriptive’ words coming out of my mouth. She saw the funny side as I spoke of a person who I found challenging.

I compared his behaviour to a shark who is strong, bold and swift while at other times downright dangerous – like when his fin goes below the surface and I feel a terrible tug from underneath… and wham my leg gets ripped off!

Later, Sis said: “You’re good, even when you’re bold.” This made me feel more grounded, centred and appreciated. She affirmed my capacity to joke about myself or another in a fun, light-hearted way.

I truly relish the joy that we experience and share with each other, and I hope for much Dublin banter to come. Here’s to you big sister! 😊
